Sunset at the Cove

Sunset at the Cove, Pastel, 25x18 Margaret Lindsey

This larger pastel painting was accomplished just after I had finished a tedious colored piece, so I felt very free to make bold strokes and let the luminous quality of the pastel do the work.  By putting both warm and cool shades of the same value in the shadow, I was trying to bring a glow, which works better when viewing the painting in person than in a photograph.
This view of Abalone Cove is from Wayfarers' Chapel and I completed a couple small studies on location before creating this piece in the studio.  This piece was done several years ago. I am going back and writing a bit about each piece to document my artistic journey!

"July 12, Avalon Bay" and "Good Morning, LA" Take Honors!

My two colored pencil pieces for the year both took Honorable Mentions at the 2010 Pencil Paintings Show sponsored by CPSA Chapter 214 and the Cypress Artists League. The paintings are on display at the Cypress, CA Community Gallery until April 16. 5700 Orange Ave, M - F 9 - 5.
There were only 4 Honorable Mentions awarded and I got 2!

Congratulations to Ester Roi, Ruth Anisman, and Ruth Arthur who took 1st, 2nd, & 3rd. And to Jeff George and Barbra Rogers who also received Honorable Mentions.

"July 12, Avalon Bay" represents a big step forward for my colored pencil technique using solvent, as shown to me by the renown colored pencil artist, Elizabeth Patterson. The great composition represents the strides I have made in this area under the guidance of Frank Minuto.

"Good Morning, LA" is a spin off of a pastel series I did and the technique was inspired by John Smolko. I just knew it was something I wanted to do.
Both images have been submitted to the CPSA International Exhibition. We'll wait and see if either are accepted.
The next exhibition I will have work in is the Pastel Society of Southern California's Inaugural Exhibition April 3 - 17 at the Creative Arts Center in Manhattan Beach at 1850 MB Blvd. The reception for that is April 9 from 6 - 9 pm.
Hope to see you there!

My First Post

This is my first post! I'm excited to have a place to call my own and to share my point of view. My friends and family will be able to keep up with what's going on with me also!
